Flower Power

I just realized how nice it is to have this blog for us! It is helpful to be able to post things when I am not ready to go public but still have questions and want feedback from friends!

So, Here is that quilt once again! Blocks, I mean! I finished appliqueing the centers. I was going to piece it together but decided to take the picture first. After all the talk we had about borders, now I am wondering on this one... border or not! The top is 64"x64" I would love to see more of that plaid shirt in this quilt!

I also learned something very valuable today. By taking the picture and turning that into black and white, I realized that I might need to move my plaid block around just a bit! A great tool when you go to assemble your blocks. I was reading the bumble bean blog about the value. She talked about the value selection by taking a black and white picture.

I think it is also very helpful in arranging a quilt blocks when they are scrappy! It gives a whole another perspective on textures and makes it so easy to spot the unwanted boo boos..  After looking at this black and white picture, I decided to switch the plaid block to it's upper right corner.

I intend to cut away the backs of the applique. There are too many seams in the center and I would like some really nice pearl cotton hand stitching with contrasting colors.
Would really love to hear back from you!

  1. What a happy quilt for spring! It really pops! I tend to like borderless quilts, because they look more old-fashioned. But I agree that it'd be fun to see more of the plaid. And now that we know how dark the plaid is, adding more would give the quilt even more dimension. Maybe a pieced border with your red scraps plus a touch of the green?

  2. Yeah, something like that! I am not sure how much of this plaid I have left. It was a goodwill shirt! But, I can add some darker reds with green and white! Will have to think about that! I put the top together today. And it is looking very springy.. even if it is freezing rain outside!
    Thank you SO much!

  3. Hand quilting with pearl cotton is informal. I'd forget the border, formal, and go for a plaid binding. I know, however, that you will do what seems right for you.

  4. Now, that seems like a good idea too. Plaid mixed with some dots to make it funky?
    Thank you.. thank you!!!

  5. Wow - this is wonderful! Definitely no border ... and binding not tooo busy - there's so much lovely in the middle. What will the backing be .. and how big is it .. my questions because you could always use the plaid for the binding but make it wider on the back making it a feature in of itself.

  6. The quilt is 64" square! I think I have a green and white fabric that I might use for the backing. Not sure yet! I have never done wider binding on the back. Do you treat it the same as regular binding only it folds wider in back?
All of your input means a great deal to me!
    Thank you!
